Building Sustainable Livelihoods: Empowering Communities Through Economic Development

A sustainable livelihood can help a family move from repeated short-term assistance towards greater independence, confidence and resilience.

SDC Nepal’s livelihood work may include sewing and tailoring equipment, poultry starter packages, mobile-shop or small retail setups, practical skills and basic business guidance. Applicants are assessed according to vulnerability, existing skills, household circumstances, local demand and their ability to use the support responsibly.

Indicative Nepal planning figures are NPR 25,000–30,000 for a sewing-machine livelihood package, around NPR 35,000 for a poultry starter package and from NPR 50,000 for a mobile-shop or small-business setup. Every approved case is costed from current local quotations, and the final package may differ according to need and location.

Procurement, handover and beneficiary acknowledgement are documented. Follow-up focuses on whether the asset is in use and whether additional guidance is needed.
